CHILDREN’S LITURGY of the WORD

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

Purpose/Mission
This ministry provides the school-age (ages 5-10) children of this parish the opportunity to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word in their own language, and in doing so to express and explore God’s unconditional love.

Meeting Information
Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place during the 9:15 a.m. Mass (English) and the 12:30 p.m. Mass (Spanish).

What is it?

Our goal is to connect with Jesus through the Sunday Mass readings and encourage children to talk about that connection with their families, cultivating the spirit of the domestic church in the home.

Our expectation is that children arrive ready to listen to the Mass readings, discuss, and learn with a spirit of reverence, respect, and participation.

The program is offered most Sundays at the 9:15a Family Mass.

How does it work?

Our children are dismissed from the Church, right after the Collect and before the Liturgy Of the Word, to a separate space to hear the Sunday scripture readings proclaimed and discussed  at an age-appropriate level.

Our children listen to the Old and New Testament readings, the Psalm, and the Gospel in words and terms that they can understand. Just like in the Liturgy of the Word in the Church, we follow the same 3 year cycle of readings as laid out for the universal Church.

Our sessions are short, usually 20 minutes, and are not faith formation classes or religious education. Depending on the season, we may add liturgically appropriate songs, however the goal is to maintain a similar environment and prayer as the rest of our community is experiencing in the main assembly.

Our children return to their families right during the Presentation of the Gifts to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist with their families and with the entire St. Philip the Apostle community.
