A native of the San Gabriel Valley, Father Anthony (Tony) Gomez was originally born in the city of Covina. Fr. Tony then spent his childhood years in La Puente, where he had his first taste of Catholic education at St. Martha’s Catholic School. As Fr. Tony continued through his formative years, he went on to attend Bishop Amat High School, paving the way for his college days at Loyola Marymount University. While at LMU, Fr. Tony earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology…but he had only begun to whet his voracious appetite for learning.

Having achieved his undergraduate degree, Fr. Tony proceeded to earn his California Life Teaching Credential from LMU in multiple subjects. Fr. Tony went on to a teaching career as the 8th-grade teacher at St. John the Baptist Catholic School. Fr. Tony, knew, however, more learning and teaching lie ahead and that his path would not end at St. John the Baptist.

Instead, after prayerful discernment, Fr. Tony answered God’s call for him and began his path toward priesthood by enrolling in St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo. During his time at St. John’s, Fr. Tony continued his education and achieved a Master of Divinity, as well as a Master of Arts in Theology.

After his ordination to the priesthood, Fr. Tony served as Associate Pastor at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Baldwin Park, followed by St. Augustine Catholic Church in Culver City. In 2004, due to his exemplary service and leadership, Fr. Tony was assigned as Administrator of St. Linus Parish in Norwalk for 2 years, before ultimately becoming Pastor at St. Linus.

Fr. Tony has varied interests and passions and has consistently dedicated himself to several ministries and leadership roles including serving as Dean of Deanery 18 in the San Pedro region of the Archdiocese and the Archdiocesan Council of Priests; serving as an active mentor for seminarians discerning priesthood; serving as a source of positive motivation for inmates through the Jail Ministry, and serving for 34 years on the CYO Advisory Board.

As a result of his extensive education and experience as an educator, Fr. Tony brings his teaching expertise and background to blend these experiences as a charismatic preacher of the church’s gospel stories and scriptural doctrines.

As a Pastor, he is an innovator most particularly in the spiritual and educational foundation of both the school and church. Father Tony is well esteemed and respected by fellow priests, as well as his parishioners and former students from varied and diverse ethnicities.

Known for his positive and motivational attitude toward God and His people, he has a passion to win at anything he does and it shows through his love for sports, which includes coaching girls Varsity volleyball and basketball. Depending on the season, Fr. Tony is likely to provide a local sports update and request prayers for The Dodgers, Lakers & UCLA.

With his family’s roots in the San Gabriel Valley dating back to the 1890s, Fr. Tony is excited about coming to Pasadena as the 8th pastor of St. Philip the Apostle Church!
